Description-
  • Matthew King was once considered one of the most fortunate men in Hawaii. His missionary ancestors who came to the islands were financially and culturally progressive--one even married a Hawaiian princess, making Matt a royal descendant and one of the state's largest landowners. But now his luck has changed. His two daughters are out of control--10-year-old Scottie has a smart-ass attitude and a desperate need for attention and 17-year-old Alex, a former model, is a recovering drug addict. His thrill-seeking and high-maintenance wife, Joanie, lies in a coma after a boat racing accident, and will soon be taken off life support. The King family can hardly picture life without their charismatic mother, but as they come to terms with this tragedy, their sadness is mixed with a sense of freedom that shames them--and spurs them into surprising actions.

About the Author-
  • Kaui Hart Hemmings grew up in Hawaii and has degrees from Colorado College and Sarah Lawrence College. A former Wallace Stegner fellow, she now lives in San Francisco where she works at the Writer’s Grotto. House of Thieves, a short story collection, was her first book. Her work has appeared in The Sun, StoryQuarterly, Zoetrope, Best American Nonrequired Reading, and Best American New Voices.

Reviews-
  • AudioFile Magazine Jonathan Davis reads in a strong voice, but each sentence ends in a pause, a vocal style that fits the story's main character, Matthew King, a man who is questioning his life. After Matthew decides to sell the last parcel of his family land in Hawaii and disconnect his comatose wife from life support, he discovers she had planned to divorce him for a new lover. Further, his 10-year-old daughter is mentally disturbed, and his 17-year-old daughter is recovering from drug addiction. As Davis inserts pregnant pauses into his delivery, we get a strong sense that Matthew doesn't know what's going to come at him next. Once Matthew forms a solid vision of his future, Davis's reading reflects the change with stronger, surer tones. S.W. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
